Gymnocalycium (Chin Cactus)
Gymnocalycium, often called chin cactus, is a compact, easy-care cactus known for its rounded shape and beautiful flowers. It gets its name from the small “chin-like” ridges beneath each spine.
Native to South America, these cacti grow naturally in dry, open landscapes and have adapted well to life in pots. They stay relatively small, making them perfect for windowsills, desks, and shelves.
Why it’s great

- Compact size, great for indoor growing
- Ideal for beginners and collectors alike
Care basics
- Light: Bright light with some protection from harsh midday sun
- Water: Water well, then let the soil fully dry before watering again. Much less water in winter
- Soil: Free-draining cactus mix
- Temperature: Likes warmth, but enjoys cooler conditions over winter
- Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is fine
Flowering: With good light and a winter rest, most Gymnocalycium will flower in spring or early summer. The flowers are large for the size of the plant and last several days.
Growth: This cactus grows slowly, which helps it keep its neat shape. It may take a few years to reach maturity, but it’s well worth the wait.
A tough, good-looking cactus that rewards simple care with stunning blooms.
